Beauty & Intention

Lucy Barlow set up the Notting Hill practice in 2013 with her brother Max, the studio Lightning designer. The Barlow & Barlow family in-house credentials have expanded further with the addition of Lucy’s husband Joshua Sear, an Architectural and Landscape designer. The Barlow and Barlow team have it all covered and can work on all aspects of their client’s projects; from design, architecture, lightning, landscape, build and implementation.

Lucy Barlow

Lucy studied fashion before attending the Inchbald School of Design. On graduating, she worked for a number of years with the decorator Mark Gillette in the north of England creating interiors for a series of big country house estates. Her debut interiors project was a considerable undertaking: the restoration of a quartet of luxury London apartments inside Gatti House, a majestic grade II listed building on the Strand. These decadently dressed residences – which broke records for property prices when offered for sale in 2015 – became a showcase for her rich interior style, which is marked by its riotous sense of fun, colour and pattern. This project was the springboard for founding her own design practice in September 2013. She says: “It’s so important to create a space that makes your life better. Colour, pattern, warmth, beautiful lighting – these are the tools to make you feel happy in a home.”

Joshua Sear

Josh achieved First Class honours in Architecture and has spent 15 years in the Construction space. Before joining his wife Lucy at Barlow&Barlow, Josh ran his own Garden design and build business called Sear-Whittaker and worked at renowned kitchen designers Holloways of Ludlow. Josh brings a wealth of technical knowledge to the business, in terms of interior architecture and construction, as well as all things landscape design and build. Josh has a tremendous amount of experience managing multi-million pound budget projects and now heads up the project management offering at Barlow&Barlow, the perfect practical foil to Lucy’s creative flair.

Whilst Lucy and Josh take the lead, our studio would not be what it is without our extended team of designers, architects and project managers. The success of our projects is down to our collaboration in-house and we are extremely privileged and lucky to have such a wonderful and talented team to support us. There are many challenges when it comes to re-designing and developing a space and it takes real teamwork to ensure that we exceed our client’s expectations and go above and beyond to bring their vision to fruition.
